01Concept

Earth and space science has four main branches. Each one studies a different part of our planet or of space, and each has smaller branches of its own.

The four main branches of Earth and space science and some of their sub-branches.
BranchWhat it studiesExample from Pakistan
GeologyThe solid Earth: rocks, minerals, earthquakes, volcanoes and the Earth's historyKhewra salt mine; fossils in the Salt Range; the 2005 earthquake
MeteorologyThe atmosphere and weather, and over long periods, climateForecasting the monsoon and heatwaves in Sindh
OceanographyThe oceans and seas: water, waves, currents, tides and sea lifeThe Arabian Sea; mangroves of the Indus delta
AstronomyEverything beyond the Earth: the Moon, Sun, planets, stars and galaxiesPredicting eclipses; calculating when the new Moon can be seen

Some important sub-branches

  • Seismology: earthquakes and how waves travel through the Earth.
  • Volcanology: volcanoes. (Pakistan has mud volcanoes on the Makran coast, in Balochistan.)
  • Palaeontology: fossils and the history of life.
  • Climatology: climate over many years, and climate change.
  • Hydrology: fresh water: rivers, lakes and groundwater.
  • Glaciology: glaciers. Pakistan has more than 7,000 glaciers, mostly in the Karakoram, Himalaya and Hindu Kush.
  • Astrophysics and cosmology: how stars work, and the history of the universe.

02Real World Examples

Finding gas at Sui

Geologists found the Sui gas field in Balochistan in 1952. It supplied much of Pakistan's gas for decades.

Cyclone warnings

Meteorologists track cyclones in the Arabian Sea and warn coastal towns in Sindh and Balochistan.

Protecting the coast

Oceanographers study how mangroves protect Karachi's coast from waves and storms.

Solar eclipses

Astronomers can predict the exact time and place of an eclipse years in advance.

Short questions

Q1.Name the four main branches of Earth and space science.Show answer

Answer

  • Geology: the solid Earth.
  • Meteorology: the atmosphere and weather.
  • Oceanography: the oceans.
  • Astronomy: space beyond the Earth.
Q2.Differentiate between geology and meteorology.Show answer

Answer

  • Geology studies the solid Earth: rocks, minerals and earthquakes.
  • Meteorology studies the atmosphere and weather, such as rain, wind and temperature.
Q3.What is the difference between astronomy and astrology?Show answer

Answer

Astronomy is a science that studies objects in space using observation and measurement. Astrology is a belief that stars control people's lives; it is not a science.

Q4.What do seismology and glaciology study?Show answer

Answer

  • Seismology: earthquakes and the waves they send through the Earth.
  • Glaciology: glaciers, such as those in the Karakoram.

Long questions

Q5.Describe the four main branches of Earth and space science with examples from Pakistan.Show answer

Answer

  1. Geology: the solid Earth. Khewra salt, Thar coal, earthquakes in the north.
  2. Meteorology: weather and climate. Monsoon forecasts, heatwaves in Sindh.
  3. Oceanography: oceans. The Arabian Sea and Indus delta mangroves.
  4. Astronomy: space. Eclipses and new-Moon calculations.

Each branch has sub-branches, such as seismology (earthquakes), climatology (climate) and astrophysics (stars).
