01Concept

Mathematics is the study of numbers, quantities, shapes and patterns, and the relationships between them, using logical reasoning. The word comes from the Greek mathema, which means learning or knowledge.

The five big ideas that mathematics studies.

What makes mathematics different

  • It uses symbols as a short, exact language. "A number added to 5 gives 12" is written x + 5 = 12. Anyone in the world can read it.
  • It depends on logical proof. In science, an idea is tested by experiment. In mathematics, a statement is proved by reasoning step by step, and once proved, it is true forever. Pythagoras' theorem, proved over 2,000 years ago, is still true today.
  • It finds patterns and general rules. Adding any two odd numbers always gives an even number: 3 + 5 = 8, 7 + 9 = 16.
  • It is exact. An answer is either right or wrong; there is no "almost correct" in a calculation.

Mathematics is the language of science

Every science uses mathematics: physicists write laws as formulas (speed = distance ÷ time), chemists calculate amounts of chemicals with moles, biologists use statistics to compare results, and engineers use geometry and calculus to design bridges and machines.

The numbers we use

The digits 0 to 9, with place value (where the position of a digit sets its value), were developed in India. The Muslim mathematician Al-Khwarizmi explained this system in Arabic, and from there it spread to Europe and the whole world. That is why they are called Hindu-Arabic numerals.

How our numbers, with zero and place value, reached the world.

02Real World Examples

GPS on your phone

Your phone finds its position by timing signals from satellites and solving equations.

Weather forecasts

Forecasters feed millions of measurements into mathematical models to predict monsoon rain.

Online banking

Your bank PIN and messages are protected by encryption, which is based on number theory (prime numbers).

Cricket statistics

Batting average, strike rate and run rate are all calculated with simple mathematics.

Short questions

Q1.Define mathematics. Where does the word come from?Show answer

Answer

Mathematics is the study of numbers, quantities, shapes and patterns, and the relationships between them, using logical reasoning.

The word comes from the Greek word mathema, meaning learning or knowledge.

Q2.How is a result proved in mathematics different from a result in science?Show answer

Answer

In science, an idea is tested by experiments and may change with new evidence. In mathematics, a statement is proved by logical reasoning, and once proved, it is always true.

Q3.Why is mathematics called the language of science?Show answer

Answer

Because every science uses mathematics to state its laws and do its calculations. For example, physics uses formulas, chemistry uses mole calculations and biology uses statistics.

Q4.What are Hindu-Arabic numerals? Why is zero important?Show answer

Answer

Hindu-Arabic numerals are the digits 0–9 with place value. They were developed in India and spread to the world through Arabic books, especially those of Al-Khwarizmi.

Zero holds an empty place, so 505 and 55 are different numbers. Without zero, place value cannot work.

Long questions

Q5.Explain the main features of mathematics with examples.Show answer

Answer

  1. Symbols: a short, exact language. x + 5 = 12.
  2. Logical proof: results are proved by reasoning and stay true forever. Pythagoras' theorem.
  3. Patterns and general rules: odd + odd = even.
  4. Exactness: an answer is either right or wrong.
  5. Use in all sciences: speed = distance ÷ time in physics.
